Somewhere between what we were and what we will be lies the life that we live. The now. It seems so delicate that it is almost hard to ever grasp it. I once had this half-filled notebook that reminds me of just this kind of fragility. The filled pages are alive with reality while the rest of them are bustling with possibility. That one line in between these two dances to the tunes of silence while staying absolutely still to take it all in!
This saree in an amazing brown hue and the softest blend of mul and viscose slub is dreamy!
Viscose is a natural fabric that is made using the viscose fibre. This fibre is extracted using a special process that involves dissolving wood pulp and regenerating it in the form of fibres. Viscose is a manufactured fibre that is made using natural materials and the final product is very similar to naturally occurring fibres such as cotton in terms of look and feel.
For Suta products, viscose fibre as weft is woven with cotton fibre as warp to create a fabric that is a magical blend of the comfort of cotton and the subtle shine of viscose. This fabric feels beautifully soft to the skin.

There was something about this guy that made me want to keep talking. He knew exactly when I would cry and made sure he had a cliched joke ready to make me laugh through the tears. When he changed schools, on his last day here, he gave me a pen to write to him. I gave him my favourite keychain. He still lives on in my mind, as a 10-year-old. And, when he comes to mind, I am one too!
This stunner of a maroon saree in a soft blend of mul and viscose slub is simply gorgeous!

When it comes to fabrics, there is a history of many types of fabrics that have been used since the dawn of the first civilizations. Some of these fabrics have weathered the changes in time and are still among the most used fabrics even today. While such fabrics and weaves have an undeniable old-world charm, at the other end of the spectrum there are some wonderful fabrics that are products of new-age innovation. These fabrics are developed with the challenges of the present world in mind while also retaining the allure of conventional fabrics. One of the most important ones in this list is the fabric made out of Eucalyptus fiber. Eucalyptus wood is used as a raw material to derive the yarn for this and it is considered to be a revolutionary fabric for ecological and economical reasons. It uses a fraction of resources that other conventional fabrics use and the solvents used are also almost 100% recovered. This is called modal(Liva) fibre and can be derived from other kinds of wood as well in sustainable ways.

In a world that mocked and ridiculed aspiring artists, Seema was the rare one who believed. What Meera found so fascinating was that Seema refused to define herself – one morning she was a sculptor. The next evening she was a poet. And on certain afternoons, she was a painter. Then, there were those weeks when she’d set off on a photography expedition, only to emerge jubilant a few days later with a few rolls of film. It didn’t bother Seema what would become of her creations. All that mattered to her was that she continued to create. At first, Meera didn’t quite know what to make of Seema. Well, if she was being honest, very little about Seema made sense to her. It was only many years after they’d parted ways that Meera saw what Seema had seen so many moons ago. Life didn’t always make sense. Often, you didn’t receive what you gave. It could be frustrating. It could seem as though you were trapped in a paradox. But the art of letting go is what would save you. Seema had learned to let go. To let go of her inhibitions. Of her fears. Of her apprehensions. Of her insecurities. And once Meera learned that, she learned what it meant to truly live in the moment.
May you embrace your own versatility when you wear this gorgeous blue handloom Jamdani saree.
Jamdani is an incredibly intricate weaving technique. Each motif is inlaid into the fabric using a supplementary weft technique. Here, extra weft threads, often denser than the base, are added using individual spools while weaving. This technique makes the motifs appear as though they are floating on the fluid cotton fabric. Jamdani weaving is highly time intensive and it takes anywhere between several weeks to months to weave one saree. It is indeed a labour of love.

Her compassion is fluid.
It finds every way there is, pervades every possible path. It levels every difference that dared to crop up. It fills up every bit of her heart, and then some.
This is a gorgeous handcrafted batik saree in handloom mulberry silk with beautiful green and brown hues.
Batik is a wax-based resist-dying technique that is said to have originated in Java, Indonesia. To make a batik, hot wax is applied to selected areas of the design to create blocks. The cloth is then dipped in dye. The parts of the design covered in wax resist the dye and retain their original colour. This process is repeated several times to create elaborate and vibrant designs. Batik is a very labour-intensive process. Since the wax is applied by hand by our artisans and the dying process does not occur in very controlled environments, there are always slight variations in the colour and design owing to the climate, temperature and other external factors. For this collection, Batik has been created on a canvas of handwoven mulberry silk, which is lightweight, easy to drape and lends an effortless elegance to the wearer. These sarees have been crafted by Suta's artisans in West Bengal.

How do you interweave peace and grace? What threads and yarns do you pick?
Do you catch figments of the autumn sky? Fleecy clouds caught on a hair stick?
As she stared into her wardrobe, two classic colours enticed her. White and red. She thinks, “Would white look dull? It isn’t really festive.” With the saree casually wrapped around her right shoulder, she looks into the distance. It’s then that her tween niece walks in and exclaims, “Are you rehearsing your pujo look?” In an instant, her eyes shine like diamonds. What’s more festive than pujo?
Put on your classic calm with this off-white pink and red mul cotton saree with zari detailing.
Our ‘made in heaven’ mul cotton, is also known as mul mul in West Bengal. The fabric is buttery soft and has a delicate beauty. She was walking down a busy street when, suddenly, something sparkly caught her eye. Bending low, she examined the object to find that it was a crescent moon-shaped sapphire ring. Although the ring was dirty, the stone still sparkled in the pale moonlight. Since there was no one around to claim it, she slipped it on her finger. She would wear the moon on her finger and, like it, continue to shine her brightest, no matter how dark the night.
Radiate peace and confidence in this this colourful saree, made of cotton and zari.

The Tussar silk is a material that is synonymous with richness and lush beauty. This material is woven using silk threads obtained from the cocoons of silkworms belonging to the moth genus Antheraea. Since most of these silkworms are found in forest areas, Tussar silk is also known to be a wild silk variety or a forest product. The characteristic features of this material are the deep gold colour that the silk exudes and the amazing texture. This kind of silk is thicker than normal silk but needs to be taken care of and preserved since the fibres are shorter and can result in a decrease in durability. But then, anything precious has to be taken care of, right? The natural sheen of this fabric is inimitable and is perfect for festive occasions as well as when you want the spotlight on you! The magical feel of this fabric combined with the weaving skills of talented weavers results in a fabric that will embrace you and make you shine!

On the radio, the weatherman chattered excitedly about the approach of the season’s first showers. A faint rumble rose in the distance, perfectly on cue.
She threw off her sandals and raced down the long, narrow corridor that wound away from her home, opening up to the fields. She felt the cold concrete yield to bare earth under her soles, the soil shifting ever so slightly as though, like her, it was impatient to witness the bounty it would birth and nurture. The earth was uneven, scattered with jagged pebbles; but each had its place in nature’s perfect symmetry. The air was moist and heavy with trepidation. It had been many long months of waiting, hoping and longing. But, like all difficult phases, this drought too had come to an end. It was time to leave the past behind and celebrate a new start.
This earth-toned handloom cotton saree will elevate your spring wardrobe.
The handloom cotton is a type of fabric that is woven using hand-operated looms. Two sets of interlacing yarns, the warp (length) and weft (width), are woven on a mechanised loom operated by weavers. These looms do not use electricity. Human handling lends the fabrics a unique feel and renders the fabrics more value. The resultant fabric is softer, more durable and much more comfortable than machine-made fabrics. Handloom cotton is more breathable and thus feels lighter in summers and provides more insulation in winters. The dyeing process also becomes easier for handloom cotton as the colour penetration is substantially more. Hues are absorbed better thus look resplendent on handloom cotton. The art of hand-weaving is labour intensive and takes a longer time. But, the beauty it adds to the fabric is priceless. Choosing handloom cotton supports the rich weaving heritage of India and lets the weavers carry on the precious art-form to the future generations as well.

She fondly remembers Hasham. He surreptitiously entered their tea-time banter, accompanied the couple on long walks and watched them chat at the dinner table. He was long gone from her life, but the remnants of the days they’d spent together followed her around. “Where did he go? Which class were you in?” her husband asks. “I was too young to remember what happened. When I returned from school one day, he wasn’t waiting at the gate.” But could she really forget the Gujarat of those days?
The thought of it… she swiftly engages herself in household chores. Represses fear and that knot in her throat.
She chooses the bits she wants to remember. The badam oil champis, a second or third helping of chilled orange drinks, clay toys, jute leaf fritters and lavenders.
Fields of lavender in a sleepy Himachali hamlet beckoned to her. Is Hasham waiting a little ahead of those fields?
Face your feelings in this mesmerising lavender handwoven mul cotton saree with ruffles. The hand-sewn chumkis and golden border will light up your day.

Like a gemstone, she had numerous facets – she was practical and logical. She was creative, with an artist’s gaze. She was a writer, photographer, editor, artist, designer and orator, and had a fine understanding of aesthetics. She was an excellent leader, who could always be counted on to get the job done. She understood what made people tick and loved the world of numbers and finance. Beyond her whimsical exterior lay an excellent mind for business. The only thing she lacked was confidence – in herself and her abilities. Instead of marvelling and honing what she had, she always looked at others with envy, wishing she could be just like them. To truly become the imperial queen that lay within her, she had to accept and acknowledge it first.
Embrace your own talents in this stunning white cotton silk saree.

A minty-blue that warranted a scream of joy and propelled the nimble legs to carry the kids as fast as they could to the streets. Her presence was a whispered legend. They said she dwelled in the heart of a mysterious forest, shrouded in an eternal veil of moonlight. They said she was an ethereal being, her beauty not unlike the soft glow of a silvered moonbeam. Beneath the celestial canvas, her raven-black hair cascaded like a waterfall of shadows. But her heart belonged to the moon, for it was the moon that had entwined her in its luminous spell centuries ago, binding her forever to its celestial realm. Each night, she would sway among the moon's gentle caresses, her movements an exquisite ballet of love and longing.
For her love was profound, a bond unbreakable by the passage of time. She knew that one day, her soul would join the moon in the heavens, a radiant star among the cosmos. Until then, she remained the enchantress of the moonlit forest, a timeless symbol of love and magic.
Let love enchant you and mesmerise you, when you wear this gorgeous mint hand-embroidered saree, that’s made of organza silk.

The mul cotton is what we call ‘Made in Heaven’ at Suta. Known in West Bengal as mul mul, the fabric is what can be categorised as muslin cotton. It is believed that this fine method of weaving cotton can be traced back to even before the Indus valley civilisation. What makes this fabric special is the almost magical process of weaving it. Cotton fibres are separated and spun into strong threads. The lightest and the most delicate fibres are separated and are then spun into muslin thread. These are then woven into fabrics by skilled weavers. The history of muslin weaving is a beautiful chapter in the history of Indian textiles. The process of the yore was much more complex and involved many unique tools that look primitive but worked like magic. The upper jaw of a catfish was used to initially clean the cotton before spinning. To separate the lightest fibres, a Dhunkar (a bamboo bow) was used, which when strung in a distinctive way made the lighter fibres rise above the heavier ones. This process gave the title ‘woven air’ to the muslin fabric. Weavers famously wove on looms that were at ground level and operated the looms from pits dug in the ground. Even during the Mughal era, the muslin fabric was seen as a symbol of power for its finesse. History is full of anecdotes to prove the awe that the muslin fabric generated. Emperor Aurangzeb is said to have chided his daughter Zeb-un-Nisa for appearing naked in the court when in reality she had been wearing several layers of the muslin cloth! Such was the fabric’s delicateness. The almost invisible fabric had made an Arab traveller in the 10th century remark that the degree of fineness is such that a garment can be drawn through a ring of a middling size. During the British colonisation and even during the Mughal rule, the art of weaving muslin took a hit as weavers were treated poorly and drought hit many of the weaving centres. As a result, today, the process of weaving has seen a lot of change. Nevertheless, the essence of it hasn’t changed and the charm of the fabric still remains.

Just like a dream, she never knew when her love for herself started. Maybe it started even before her memory became a part of her. Maybe, she put on her crown even before she came into the world, only to arrive in perfect style for this wonderful journey!
This sultry made in heaven mul saree in blue is a sight to behold!
No matter how much we move forward in time, it is often our very roots that hold us in place. As far as our fabrics are concerned, we are in an age of constant innovation and up-gradation. Even so, our love for age-old crafts and processes like block printing can never fade. Block printing is an art that is at least a few centuries old. Especially in India, the art has evolved to incorporate the motifs and designs of different regions. It is a process of printing designs on a base fabric using wooden stamps dipped in dye. The charm lies in the fact that all the steps of block printing are done by artisans using their hands. Right from carving the wooden stamp, which itself requires a lot of expertise and skill, to printing the fabric and drying it, each step is carried out by dedicated artisans. The intricately carved stamps are a wonder by themselves and there are separate sects of artisans who specialise in this and create highly nuanced wooden stamps using chisels, drills and hammers. Once this is done, mustard oil is applied to the stamps and they are left to soak up the oil to prevent cracks. Meanwhile, the base fabric is washed and dyed. Handloom fabrics are most preferred as they absorb the colours of the print gorgeously. Following this, the fabric is laid out on a flat surface and held in place with small pins. The wooden stamp is dipped in the chosen dye and then slammed onto the fabric in one forceful motion. The entire saree or as much as required is printed this way by consecutively pressing the stamp on the fabric with force. After the process is over, the saree is washed and dried. The patience, skill and creativity of artisans come forth brilliantly with a hand block printed saree. There are bound to be small irregularities in the print as a result of human error and that lends a whole new level of allure to this art-form.
The block-printing on this saree is done on a made-in-heaven mul cotton fabric which is lighter than air and loved by our Suta Queens immensely.
